Victoria Falls Helicopter
Batoka Gorge below Victoria Falls with spray cloud

22–30 minute helicopter flights: gorge and wildlife

The longer flights add what the short circuit leaves out: a run along the Batoka Gorge — one seller’s route enters at rapid no. 8, another flies as far as rapid no. 26 — and time over the parks along the upper Zambezi, where sellers advertise wildlife spotting from the air. They depart from Victoria Falls Town in Zimbabwe and from Maramba Airfield in Livingstone, Zambia.

The route: into the gorge, over the parks

The longer flights are not simply more minutes over the falls — they add the Batoka Gorge. Shearwater’s “Explore the Zambezi” (flown by the Zambezi Helicopter Company) enters the gorge at rapid no. 8, known to rafters as “Midnight Diner”, and follows the river between canyon walls that narrow to about 30 metres before climbing out over the falls. It then continues upstream past Long Island, where the Zambezi widens into an island-dotted, wildlife-rich river, and returns over the town of Victoria Falls.

Chikopokopo’s 24–25-minute version is sold as a game flight: the falls first, then time over the parks along the upper Zambezi looking for elephants, hippos and buffalo from the air. On the Zambia side, Livingstone’s Adventure flies a 22-minute flight with a dive into the gorge, and a 30-minute flight that follows the river down to rapid no. 26 before circling the falls and the islands.

Is the longer flight worth it?

An honest answer from the reviews: travellers who took the short flight often say it was enough — and travellers who took the long one call the gorge run the highlight. One reviewer who flew the 30-minute Livingstone route describes circling the falls repeatedly with time left for zebras, elephants and hippos on the way back; another calls the flight through the gorge “breathtaking”. The premium is real (US$50 government fee instead of US$37 on the Zimbabwe side, and roughly double the airtime cost) — pay it for the gorge and the wildlife, not for a better view of the falls, which the short flight already delivers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference to the 12–15 minute flights?

Roughly double the airtime, and two things the short circuit does not include: a run along the Batoka Gorge below the falls, and unhurried time over the parks along the upper Zambezi where sellers advertise wildlife spotting. The falls themselves are covered on both.

What do I pay at the helipad?

On the Zimbabwe side, sellers list a US$50 government fee per person for the longer flights, payable at check-in. On the Zambia side it is US$6 flight fee plus US$12.14 (22 minutes) or US$16.55 (30 minutes) fuel surcharge.

What is the Premier Lounge option?

Shearwater sells the 22-minute “Explore the Zambezi” flight in a second variant with access to the Premier Lounge at the Zambezi Helipad. Same flight, same route — the difference is the lounge before and after. Both variants are on the comparison card above with live prices.
