The route: what you actually see

The sellers describe remarkably consistent loops. MJair’s 12-minute flight lifts off, follows the upper Zambezi, then circles the falls so that both sides of the helicopter get the full curtain — the aircraft fly with bubble windows, and several sellers guarantee a window seat for every passenger. On the way back the route crosses the Zambezi National Park, where travellers regularly report elephants, hippos, giraffes and buffalo seen from the air.

Shearwater’s “Flight of Angels” flies what one traveller describes as a figure of eight directly over the falls, so every seat sees the curtain from both directions. Dream Africa’s 13–15-minute flight adds views of the Victoria Falls Bridge and the town of Livingstone on the Zambian side. On the Zambia side, Livingstone’s Adventure starts at Maramba Airfield and circles the falls and the islands immediately upstream.

From booking to take-off

The pattern is the same with every operator here: pickup from your hotel or lodge roughly 30 minutes before the flight, a short drive to the helipad (sellers state 5–10 minutes from Victoria Falls Town), then weighing, a safety briefing and seat allocation — travellers report that seats are assigned by weight, and that helicopters carry four to five passengers plus the pilot, often with two aircraft flying in sequence.

Two things travellers mention again and again: the government fee (US$35–37 for the short flight on the Zimbabwe side) is collected in cash at check-in, and you are filmed and photographed from the weighing station onwards — the resulting photo/video package is offered after landing for about US$25–50. It is optional, and more than one review calls it pushy; budget for it or decline it, but don’t be surprised by it.

Flights only operate in fair weather. A traveller whose flight was postponed reports that rebooking to the next day was uncomplicated — helpful to know if you fly at the start of your stay rather than the end.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 12–15 minute flight long enough?

Reviews land on both sides. Many travellers on the most-booked short flights write that the short circuit was “perfect” and enough to see the whole falls — the aircraft circles the curtain several times. A noticeable minority wish they had booked the longer flight for the gorge run and the wildlife. If the falls themselves are what you came for, the short flight covers them; if you want the Batoka Gorge from inside, look at the 22–30 minute flights.

What do I pay at the helipad on top of the online price?

On the Zimbabwe side, sellers list a government park fee and fuel surcharge of US$35–37 per person for the short flight, payable in cash at check-in. On the Zambia side it is US$6 flight fee plus US$9 fuel surcharge for the 15-minute flight. The exact amount is stated on each comparison card above, as published on the seller’s page.

Which side of the border should I fly from?

Both sides fly the short circuit. The Zimbabwe side (Victoria Falls Town) has the larger choice of operators and time slots; the Zambia side (Livingstone, Maramba Airfield) has lower local fees. If you stay in Livingstone and want to fly from the Zimbabwe side, Chikopokopo meets guests at the border at no charge — hotel pickup in Livingstone costs US$30 per person extra.

Can children fly?

Shearwater’s listing states there is no age limit; children must be accompanied by an adult, and children under 3 fly free on an adult’s lap. Weight rules differ per operator — on the Zambia side Livingstone’s Adventure states a maximum passenger weight of 100 kg.
